What exactly is cold???

I woke up this morning to walk the stinky dog, and the thermometer read -14. THAT my friends is cold. For you Floridians, I hate to tell you this but 60 is not cold. Actually, for that matter neither is 32.

So, lets put it in context here: -14 is 46 degrees colder than 32. That is the same difference as 78 to 32, and you all know that is a very big difference.

Further more, the wind-chills are actually anywhere from -20 to -35 depending on the wind speed out. You can do the math on that.

So, what does -14 feel like? Well, first when you walk out, your nose hairs freeze instantly and your breath is completely frosted. It even feels like your tongue freezes if you breathe through your mouth. The dog starts to shiver immediately and within 30 seconds starts to attempt to walk with out her feet touching the ground, which is kinda funny. Exposed skin, starts to hurt after a minute, and much less if the wind is blowing. My legs start to hurt after two minutes even with thick pants and long-johns on. Less than great gloves don't seem to help much. Any cracks in your cloths allowing air in will cause some major discomfort. You don't want to stay out for more than 4 minutes or you will be in some serious pain. Frostbite would set in in about 5 minutes on exposed skin. The walls of the inside of the house are very cold, and you could probably freeze water on them. Most of the windows are frosted too.

So, today we are skipping church. Ian might freeze solid out in this stuff. I believe our high will be about -5 today, and we are not going anywhere. As always, when winter weather returns to 32, we will break out the shorts and wash our cars.

Count me OUT! NorCal's winters are nice and cool, with the occasional night freezes. Usually a couple of cotton layers (undershirt with a flannel or a long sleeve t-shirt perhaps) and a jacket is sufficient, three maybe layers of cotton on a cold day.

That's a cool thermometer in the picture though. Do you have to drill a small hole through the wall for it to register the outside temp?

You are right, dear son, Florida temperatures are not that cold. But our house is like a tin can and it feels cold unless the temp outside 80 or above. Also, as you get older (and you WILL get there some day too!!) your body doesn't handle the cold weather like it used to.
